Secli Weinwelt: A Symbiotic Blend of Function and Aesthetics

Carlos Martinez Architekten's Award-Winning Design Fuses Dwelling and Office Spaces

Carlos Martinez Architekten's Secli Weinwelt, an innovative dwelling and office building in Buchs, Switzerland, is a testament to the power of design to transcend initial client needs and create a compelling mix of uses. This article delves into the unique properties and inspiration behind this award-winning design.

The Secli Weinwelt project was born out of a need to combine office and storage spaces to minimize logistic friction loss. However, the concept and realization of the design extend beyond this initial requirement. The architects and the client saw the opportunity to develop a hybrid type for a compelling mix of uses: a world for living, working, and enjoyment with a sense of community. The different purposes delicately subordinate from the original idea of wine culture.

The design's unique properties lie in its elementary terracotta-coated volumes that assemble like exquisite boxes of wine into a fascinating residential and office building. It mediates the urban situation and with regard to the content. 15 wine boxes within a height of two floors staple to a symbiotic structured organism. The building's core, a chapel of wine, is a fully enclosed room where the dimension of the boxes gets evident and every wine lover’s heart will beat faster.

Upon entering the salesroom with the attached multifunctional event room and storage, one gets surrounded by the gravity of the concrete. This heaviness is combined with silence. Between unobtrusive and dimmable luminous elements, circular acoustic parts cushion the reverberation time. Round glass components lead the view to the vast high-rise rack, adding to the building's unique aesthetic appeal.

The Secli Weinwelt project was planned between 2012 and 2014 and constructed from 2013 to 2015. It boasts a volume of 14,400 m3 and a floor area of 2,800m2. The design team included Carlos Martinez, Matthias Waibel, José Yerga, and Nevzad Hamsic.

This innovative design has not gone unnoticed in the industry. It was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, a testament to its top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable design that illustrates outstanding expertise and innovation. The design is admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

Secli Weinwelt is a shining example of how design can transcend initial needs and create a compelling mix of uses. It stands as a testament to the power of design to create a world for living, working, and enjoyment with a sense of community. It's a design that truly celebrates the culture of wine.
